Italy is a country with a significant amount of volcanic activity when compared to neighbouring countries, containing the only active volcanoes in all of mainland Europe. This is mainly due to the fact that the boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate is only a short distance to the south, geographically speaking. The magma spewed out by Italy's volcanoes is thought to be the result of the upward forcing of rocks being melted by the subduction of one plate below another. There are three main clusters of volcanism in Italy: a line of volcanic centres running northwest along the central part of the Italian mainland; a cluster around the Mediterranean island of Pantelleria; and another cluster in the northeast of Sicily. Only three of Italy's volcanoes have erupted in the last hundred years; Vesuvius, Mount Etna and Stromboli.
